JOEY HADLEY
Boxing Champion...Professional Fighter...Shelby County Deputy Sheriff...Boxing Instructor
Most people in the Memphis, Tennessee area know Joey Hadley from his traffic reports on radio and television over the last 25 years or as a deputy sheriff with the Shelby county sheriff’s office for 29 years. But before he was a deputy or a traffic reporter, he was a very successful amateur and professional boxer. At the age of 13 Joey saw Elvis Presley in the movie "Kid Galahad" & from that moment on he knew he wanted to become a boxer. Several years later Joey had the privilege of meeting Elvis in Las Vegas.
Joey won the Memphis and Mid-South Golden Gloves 6 times!
He was a 3 time Southeastern AAU champion!
In 1971 he was the United States and North American champion!
In December of 1973 he knocked out Leon Spinks in the first round in Memphis, TN.
As an amateur his record was 140 fights, out of which he lost 18. Of the 122 he won, 93 of them were won by knockout!
He turned pro in 1974 and moved to upstate New York and lived and trained with Cus D’Amato, who at that time had managed and trained Heavyweight Champion Floyd Patterson and Light heavyweight Champion Jose Torres. Cus was also the original trainer and manager of Iron Mike Tyson but died shortly before Tyson won his world title.
Joey was considered an outstanding prospect for the US Olympic team!
Joey had 6 pro fights, winning them all by knockout, but because of an eye infection had to retire.
